Why Gen Z Thinks Paying with Cash is ‘Cringe’ | The Rise of Digital Payments (2025)

Is cash really becoming a relic of the past? It seems so, at least according to the habits of Generation Z, who are increasingly ditching dollar bills in favor of digital payments. But why the shift? Let's dive in.

Recent data paints a clear picture: for many young adults in their twenties, physical cash is considered, well, 'cringe'. A Harris Poll, reported by The New York Post, surveyed 2,080 US adults and found that over 50% of Gen Z use cash only as a last resort.

This generation, deeply immersed in technology, seems to prefer the convenience of debit cards and mobile payment apps.

And this is the part most people miss... Nearly 30% of those surveyed believe that people who still use cash are either out of touch or, yes, 'cringe'. But, before you start judging, consider this: Gen Z's preference isn't just about being trendy. They claim that digital payments actually help them stick to their budgets.

But here's where it gets controversial... The study revealed that over 50% of Gen Z admit they're more likely to overspend when they have physical cash. Digital payments, on the other hand, provide a clearer view of their spending habits, helping them avoid impulsive purchases.

Interestingly, this generation is also focused on building a secure financial future.

Contrary to the stereotype of being 'doom-spenders', 46% are building emergency funds, and 39% are prioritizing financial security. They're saving for experiences like travel (37%), big-ticket items like cars and electronics (34%), and even major life milestones like moving out (36%).

Owen Jennings, head of business at Cash App's parent company, Block Inc., highlights that digital banking solutions are evolving to meet the needs of this generation. They are offering high-interest savings accounts to encourage healthy financial habits.

What do you think? Is cash truly on its way out, or is there still a place for it in our increasingly digital world? Do you agree with Gen Z's perspective, or do you have a different take on the matter? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
