The Heat's opening batter, Jack Wildermuth, got things started with a 15-ball 39, including four fours and three sixes. Khawaja, however, took a back seat until the fourth over, when Wildermuth was dismissed by Daniel Sams. David Warner and Sam Billings then formed an 84-run stand, with Warner raising his third consecutive fifty-plus score. Despite showing visible discomfort after being struck on the knee, Warner continued batting. However, his availability for the rest of the tournament is uncertain after Billings sustained a quadricep injury. Warner's dismissal in the 16th over didn't deter Billings and Nic Maddinson, who kept the tempo up with regular boundaries, ending with 180/6.
In another thrilling BBL match, the Melbourne Stars asserted their dominance in the second Melbourne Derby, cruising to an eight-wicket victory over the Renegades. The Stars' attack, led by Marcus Stoinis' 3 for 33, put immediate pressure on the Renegades. Despite Josh Brown's resilient 80 off 50 deliveries, the Renegades struggled to break free. Tim Seifert's early dismissal and Jake Fraser-McGurk's controversial hit that went over the stadium roof, deemed dead ball under new rules, further contributed to the Renegades' woes.
The Renegades' middle order couldn't accelerate against the Stars' clinical rotation, finishing on 166 for 7. Harper continued to lead the charge, adding 78 runs in just 46 balls for an unbroken third-wicket stand with Glenn Maxwell, taking the Stars over the line in the 16th over. Harper's performance was a testament to his skill and experience, while Maxwell's 17-ball 20 not out sealed the victory.
