'A Friendship to Cherish'
In a heartwarming display of unity, Ukrainian families gathered at St. Joseph's Community College in Kilkee, Co. Clare, to witness President Volodymyr Zelensky's speech to the Irish parliament. The impact was profound, especially for the school's Ukrainian students, who make up a significant portion of the student body.
Alona Zalevska, a Ukrainian refugee, shared her raw emotions, saying, "It was so emotional. When our president spoke, my heart swelled with pride and hope." She recalled her difficult decision to leave Ukraine, prioritizing safety, and the overwhelming warmth she and her family received in Ireland. "Strangers became helpers, and helpers became friends," she added, expressing her gratitude to the Irish people.
'A Ray of Hope in Dark Times'
Dina Ostroukh, another refugee, found solace in President Zelensky's words. "I want to believe in a Christmas miracle, that peace will come to my land," she said, wiping away tears. She expressed her gratitude for the support of the Irish people, who have become her people, offering a glimmer of hope in the darkness.
'Torn Between Two Homes'
Oksana Semenova, an English teacher at the school, shared her mixed emotions. While she feels a strong connection to Ireland, where her son Ivan is preparing for his Leaving Certificate, she also feels a deep attachment to her hometown in Odessa, Ukraine. "We are torn between two countries," she said, explaining how they stay connected to Ukraine daily, checking the news and worrying about their hometowns.
Ivan, her son, expressed his admiration for President Zelensky, calling him "a good man" and "the best president Ukraine has ever had." He hopes that America will support Zelensky's efforts to bring peace to their country.
'A Future of Solidarity and Support'
Varvara Yukhova, a first-year student at St. Joseph's, spoke passionately about Kilkee, her new home by the sea. While she loves her life in Ireland and plans to attend university there, she also hopes to return to Ukraine one day to help her family and her country.
Agnes Hehir, the school's principal, reflected on the successful integration of Ukrainian students into the school and community. "They have brought so much to our school," she said, highlighting the offering of Ukrainian and Russian as oral subjects. "It shows the solidarity between our two countries," she added, emphasizing the importance of support during these challenging times.
