Texans stun expectations with a 20-10 victory over the Chiefs, improving to 8-5 and tightening the AFC playoff picture. Houston’s defense clamped down at crucial moments, potentially locking Kansas City out of the postseason after a hard-fought win by the Texans.
The pivotal moment came late in the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 10 and 10:22 left, Chiefs coach Andy Reid rolled the dice on a fourth-and-1 from his own 31. Patrick Mahomes felt immediate pressure, and his pass to Rashee Rice fell incomplete, keeping the game within reach for Houston.
Houston capitalized on the short field, marching into the end zone on Dare Ogunbowale’s first touchdown since 2022 to take a 17-10 lead.
Kansas City had another chance to go for it on fourth down, but Mahomes’ attempt to Rice was incomplete again, stalling the comeback bid.
KC’s final spark faded with under four minutes to play. A shaky sequence began when Travis Kelce dropped Mahomes’ first pass of the possession. The next pass was slightly behind Kelce, who bobbled it, and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair swooped in for a back-breaking turnover.

The game underscored how much the Texans benefited from favorable field positions, offsetting a standout defensive effort by Kansas City in the second half. Houston rode a steady performance from quarterback C.J. Stroud, who finished 15-of-31 for 203 yards and a touchdown. Nico Collins contributed a game-high 121 receiving yards on four catches, all coming in the first half.
The Chiefs, meanwhile, were slowed by Mahomes’s rough afternoon: 14-of-33 for 160 yards, three interceptions, and the team’s leading rusher with 59 yards on seven carries. Mahomes logged the lowest passer rating of his career at 19.8, an uncharacteristic mark that included his first zero-passing TD game with multiple picks and sub-50 percent completion.
Travis Kelce was largely neutralized, recording only one catch for eight yards on five targets. Xavier Worthy added three grabs for 55 yards, and Rashee Rice finished with four receptions for 34 yards.
With the win, Houston sits at 8-5 and holds the No. 7 seed in the AFC, thanks in part to their head-to-head win against the Colts. Next Sunday, the Texans welcome the 3-10 Cardinals for a matinee on home turf.
The 6-7 Chiefs have fallen out of the divisional race after years of dominance in the AFC West, a streak that predates Mahomes’ tenure as starter.
