Fast forward to his sophomore year, and Carlson dominated the state championships, sweeping gold in his individual events and anchoring two relay teams to victory. His times in the 50 free (20.77) and 100 free (45.34) were personal bests, solidifying his status as a rising star. Carlson's team, Albuquerque Academy, dominated the competition, winning nine events and leaving their rivals in the dust.
The young swimmer's success continued into the spring, where he represented Charger Aquatics at the Sectionals meet in Austin. Here, he set personal records in the 50, 100, and 200-yard freestyle events, proving his versatility and talent. Carlson's times of 20.75, 44.98, and 1:38.94, respectively, showcased his rapid improvement and potential for greatness.
Carlson's winning streak extended into the summer, as he claimed the 100 and 200-yard freestyle titles at the Western Zone Senior Championships, setting new personal bests. His times of 52.26 and 1:55.53 further solidified his place among the nation's top swimmers.
But here's where it gets controversial: Carlson's recruitment to Stanford comes at a pivotal moment for the team. In their first year in the ACC, Stanford finished second behind their former Pac-12 rival, California, and also placed second among ACC schools at the 2025 Men's NCAA Championships. The team will soon bid farewell to their top finishers in the 50 and 100-yard events, leaving a void that Carlson is poised to fill.
Stanford has been on a recruiting spree, attracting top-ranked swimmers like Ethan Ekk, Jason Zhao, Maxwell Stanislaus, and Nathan Foucu.
