Ryan Murphy's 'Love Story': How Criticism Fueled JFK Jr. & Carolyn Bessette Series (2026)

The team behind the highly anticipated series 'Love Story' has an interesting take on the early criticism they faced. In a bold move, they reveal that the scrutiny actually fueled their creative fire, pushing them to refine their craft.

'Love Story', a dramatization of the relationship between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, has been a topic of much discussion since its announcement. With its premiere just around the corner, the show's creators and cast opened up about how they navigated the initial backlash.

Paul Anthony Kelly, who portrays John F. Kennedy Jr., shared with USA TODAY, "It really made us work harder. It gave more fuel to the fire of creating this. We had to dive deeper and ensure every detail was perfect."

The controversy began with the release of test photos, which sparked debates about the costumes and hairstyles. Fashion writer Danya Issawi criticized the modern-day feel of the garments, stating they lacked the authenticity of the '90s era. Ryan Murphy, the series creator, quickly clarified that the images were merely test shots, not indicative of the final product.

But here's where it gets controversial... Murphy revealed to Puck that the test photos were a strategic move to deter paparazzi, allowing the actors to work without feeling attacked. He emphasized, "That is not the wig we're using, that is not the purse we're using. It was a work in progress."

Connor Hines, the series creator, adds that the early criticism allowed them to course-correct. For instance, after initial photos of Sarah Pidgeon's hair received criticism, Murphy decided to have her dye her hair instead of wearing a wig. The show also replaced its costume designer during production, according to Vanity Fair.

Hines shares, "Once we had it all figured out, we realized it was a blessing. And everybody ended up looking fantastic."

The passionate reactions from fans were heartening, reinforcing the public's enduring interest in the Kennedy story. Hines notes, "I was moved by how strongly people still felt about John and Carolyn, even 25 years later."

Pidgeon, who plays Carolyn Bessette, describes the criticism as a new experience. She emphasizes, "Getting her physically right was crucial. She's an icon of fashion, and I think we nailed it."

'Love Story' will premiere its first three episodes on February 12th, on FX and Hulu. With its star-studded cast, including Grace Gummer, Alessandro Nivola, and Naomi Watts, the series promises to be a captivating watch.
