Architecture as a Force for Inclusion: The Nedarag Guesthouse Story
Imagine a remote village, home to a marginalized community, where a simple act of hospitality becomes a powerful statement of resistance. This is the story of the Nedarag Guesthouse, a project that challenges the very foundations of Iran's centralized and religiously homogeneous development system. But here's where it gets controversial... While the Iranian government often overlooks—or even actively excludes—ethnic and religious minorities, this guesthouse, designed by Next Office–Alireza Taghaboni, stands as a beacon of hope and inclusivity in the southeastern village of Kahnanikash, home to the Sunni-Baluch minority. And this is the part most people miss: the local practice of Zekri, a religious belief deemed heretical by the central government, adds another layer of complexity to the community's struggle for recognition.
Curated by Miwa Negoro and completed in 2024, this 95-square-meter non-profit project is more than just a building; it’s a symbol of resilience and cultural preservation. Photographed by Neel Studio and Ehsan Hajirasouliha, the guesthouse’s design not only provides a space for visitors but also serves as a testament to the power of architecture in fostering community and challenging systemic exclusion.
