A powerful protest against the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics has shaken Milan, with thousands taking to the streets to voice their dissent. The protest, organized by a coalition of left-leaning groups, brought together a diverse range of individuals with unique yet interconnected grievances. Among them were environmentalists, concerned about the felling of trees for the Games, and those questioning the allocation of public funds for the Olympics when Milan and Italy face more urgent issues.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some protesters, like Davide Forsati, argue that they are being forced to pay for the Olympics through their taxes, while not seeing any tangible benefits. This sentiment is shared by Jessica Todaro, a unionist, who believes the Olympics have become a tool for exploitation, particularly of hotel workers.
Todaro's union group supports the Olympics as a means of peace, but they argue that the current management is turning it into a 'money-making machine' for the wealthy.
And this is the part most people miss... The protest also saw the local pro-Palestine movement take center stage, with flags and chants demanding freedom for Palestine. Vincenzo Strambio, a pro-Palestine marcher, questioned Israel's participation in the Games, given the exclusion of Russian athletes due to the Ukraine war.
The march, a slow yet determined procession, lasted from afternoon until dusk, ending with a tense standoff between protesters and police. The use of tear gas by the police, in response to fireworks exploded near them, resulted in a swift retreat by the protesters.
This protest is just one example of the growing opposition to the Olympics, with suggestions of another protest in Verona on the final day of the Games. Additionally, rail disruptions on the day of the protest, due to suspected sabotage, further highlight the challenges faced by those traveling to the Winter Olympics.
