Imagine a world where diabetes and hypertension are no longer silent threats, but instead, we empower communities to take control of their health. That's the vision Merck Foundation is bringing to life, and it's an inspiring journey worth exploring.
On this World Diabetes Day, Merck Foundation, the philanthropic powerhouse of Merck KGaA Germany, is taking a bold step forward. In collaboration with Africa and Asia's First Ladies, Ministries of Health, Medical Societies, and Academia, they're marking the day with a nationwide initiative: the Diabetes & Hypertension Blue Points Program.
Dr. Rasha Kelej, the CEO of Merck Foundation, is leading this charge. She emphasizes, "Every day is World Diabetes Day for us. We're committed to transforming diabetes care and related fields like endocrinology, hypertension, and cardiology across Africa, Asia, and beyond. Our goal is simple yet powerful: to make early detection, effective treatment, and healthy living the norm."
But here's where it gets even more impressive: Merck Foundation isn't just talking the talk; they're walking the walk. They've awarded a whopping 925 scholarships to healthcare providers from 52 countries. These scholarships cover a range of critical medical specialties, from online one-year PG Diplomas to two-year Master's degrees in diabetes, endocrinology, cardiovascular care, and more.
Dr. Life Zambezi, a Merck Foundation alumnus from Zimbabwe, shares the impact of these scholarships. "The PG Diploma in Diabetes Management was a game-changer for me. It not only increased my knowledge but also fueled my passion for treating diabetes. Thanks to this course, I established a diabetes clinic at a district hospital, bringing much-needed relief to countless patients."
Merck Foundation's efforts extend beyond major cities. Dr. Kelej explains, "We're providing scholarships to doctors in remote and underserved areas too. This empowers them to set up diabetes centers or clinics within their hospitals, ensuring quality care reaches all communities."
The need for such initiatives is stark. According to the World Health Organization, Africa has a high rate of undiagnosed diabetes, with 54% of adults unaware of their condition. Projections suggest this number could rise significantly by 2045.
So, Merck Foundation is taking action. As part of their Community Awareness Program, they've launched various initiatives to raise awareness about diabetes and hypertension. They've even composed and sung an impactful song, "No More Sugar," with Ghanaian singer Cwezi Oteng.
In partnership with African and Asian First Ladies, they've released children's storybooks and animation films like "Sugar Free Jude" and "Mark's Pressure." These creative tools inspire communities to adopt healthier habits, reduce sugar and salt intake, stay active, and avoid smoking.
Dr. Kelej adds, "By promoting these habits, we can tackle diabetes and hypertension, major risk factors for serious complications and heart disease. We're empowering future generations to lead healthier lives."
Merck Foundation's impact doesn't stop there. They've released three songs in three languages: "NO More Diabetes, Sugar Free" in English, "Dites non au Diabète" in French, and "Chega de Diabete" in Portuguese. They've also launched a pan-African TV program, "Our Africa," hosted by Dr. Kelej herself, which raises awareness about social and health issues, including diabetes and healthy living.
Additionally, Merck Foundation, together with African and Asian First Ladies, annually launches awards for media representatives, fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians, and singers. These awards aim to promote a healthy lifestyle and raise awareness about diabetes and hypertension prevention and early detection.
The awards include the Merck Foundation Media Recognition Awards, Film Awards, Fashion Awards, and Song Awards, all with the theme of "Diabetes & Hypertension." The submission deadline for all these awards is 30th October 2026.
If you're inspired by Merck Foundation's work and want to get involved, you can apply for the awards or join the conversation on their social media platforms. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against diabetes and hypertension.
Remember, every step towards a healthier lifestyle counts, and every voice raised in awareness makes a powerful impact.
Let's keep the conversation going and make a healthier future a reality!
