K-Pop Animated Movie 'Rainmakers' - Behind the Scenes with Director Lee Seok-hoon (2025)

Get ready for a K-pop revolution in animation! RedRover is stepping boldly into uncharted territory with 'Rainmakers,' their first animated feature inspired by the vibrant world of K-pop. And here’s where it gets really exciting: the project is being crafted by none other than acclaimed Korean filmmaker Lee Seok-hoon, known for his ability to blend thrilling action with heartfelt storytelling.

RedRover, a South Korea-based studio, is showcasing 'Rainmakers' at this year’s AFM alongside their other highly anticipated projects: 'The Nut Job 3' and 'MegaRacer,' a sci-fi racing adventure currently in post-production. The 'Nut Job' franchise has already proven its global appeal, racking up over $200 million worldwide across its first two installments.

'Rainmakers' tells the story of an unlikely duo — an orphan and a princess — who band together with society's outcasts to confront a corporate threat endangering their world. But this isn’t just any animated adventure; music pulses at its core. K-pop’s iconic style, high-energy choreography, and dazzling visuals are seamlessly integrated throughout the film, set against the imaginative backdrop of Planet Nero. Fans can also expect original tracks from a yet-to-be-named K-pop producer, adding authenticity and excitement to the story.

Amy Shi, strategy executive and producer at RedRover, shared her enthusiasm: 'As Korean culture, and K-pop in particular, continues to captivate audiences around the globe, we are thrilled to bring a daring, music-driven animated feature to life under Lee Seok-hoon’s visionary direction. 'Rainmakers' fuses the electrifying energy of K-pop with cinematic storytelling, creating a colorful and immersive universe that we can’t wait for audiences to experience.'

Lee Seok-hoon is among South Korea’s top-grossing directors, celebrated for his versatility across genres. His action-packed sequel 'Confidential Assignment 2: International' was Korea’s third highest-grossing film in 2022, while 'The Himalayas' topped the local box office for three consecutive weeks. Lee has also directed the period adventure 'The Pirates' and the romantic comedy 'Dancing Queen.'

Reflecting on the project, Lee said, 'Collaborating with RedRover is an incredible opportunity. Animation fascinates me because it allows the creation of entire worlds beyond the limitations of live-action. With RedRover’s deep expertise in global family entertainment, I am confident we can deliver a production that resonates with audiences everywhere.'

Meanwhile, 'The Nut Job 3' will continue the beloved franchise, following Surly’s daughter Hazel on a journey that tests the father-daughter bond while old nemesis Raccoon seeks revenge. 'MegaRacer' sets its story during a rare celestial event occurring every eight years, where racers traverse time and space in pursuit of glory and mysterious powers.

Founded in 2004 as a 3D stereoscopic technology company, RedRover later transitioned into animation, earning recognition for works like 'Spark,' featuring voices of Jessica Biel, Hilary Swank, Susan Sarandon, and Patrick Stewart, as well as series like 'Bolts & Blip' and 'Bubble Bubble Marin.'

Could 'Rainmakers' be the K-pop animation breakthrough the world didn’t know it needed? Or will it face skepticism from traditional animation fans? Share your thoughts — do you think this fusion of music and storytelling could redefine animated cinema, or is it just another ambitious gamble?
