Filming is taking place in Bangkok, Thailand, under the direction of Jalmari Helander, known for his previous works like Sisu. The film, aptly titled John Rambo, aims to explore the backstory of the titular character long before the events of the 1982 classic First Blood, which starred the well-known Sylvester Stallone and was adapted from David Morrell’s novel.
Leading the cast is Noah Centineo, who has also appeared in Street Fighter this year. Lionsgate, the company behind this production, recently revealed that the film's ensemble will feature a talented lineup including Yao from Sinners, Jason Tobin from A Thousand Blows, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White known for Yellowstone, and Tayme Thapthimthong from The White Lotus.
The screenplay for this prequel was crafted by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, both of whom have a firm grasp on action narratives, having worked on projects like Black Adam. This film is being produced by Millennium Media, Templeton Media, and AGBO, with a team of producers that includes Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger, Michael Disco, and Angela Russo-Otstotas. Notably, Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Trevor Short, Dallas Sonnier, and Amanda Presmyk are stepping into executive producer roles.
Stallone first brought the character of John Rambo to life in First Blood, where he portrayed a Vietnam War veteran caught in a conflict with local law enforcement and the National Guard. The film was a commercial success, grossing $125 million worldwide, equivalent to $417 million today, and it gave rise to multiple sequels, with the last one being Rambo: Last Blood in 2019.
Reflecting on the significance of this project, director Helander shared, "When I was 11, I watched First Blood for the first time, and it profoundly impacted my life. Rambo wasn’t just a movie; it became a lasting inspiration that shaped my desire to become a filmmaker. Erin Westerman, the president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "We are excited to commence production on John Rambo.
