This Friday night will forever be etched in Jaylon Tyson's memory. The short-handed Cavaliers pulled off a stunning fourth-quarter rally, leaving the Philadelphia 76ers reeling. This wasn't just any win; it was a testament to the Cavs' resilience, completing a two-game sweep against a formidable playoff contender.
Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson acknowledged the Sixers' toughness, stating, "They took us out of everything we wanted to run. It was like a playoff game from them. We struggled to handle it at times, but as the game wore on, we got better and better. We need to go on a little streak here and get in that top 4 picture. That’s the goal. Hopefully this will be a springboard.”
Cleveland faced adversity from the start, missing key players like Darius Garland, Sam Merrill, Dean Wade, and Max Strus. This meant others had to step up.
Before the game, Atkinson highlighted Craig Porter Jr., Lonzo Ball, and Tyrese Proctor, anticipating increased roles for these ballhandlers. They certainly delivered.
But the spotlight belonged to Tyson. This was a career-defining performance for the No. 20 pick from the 2024 NBA Draft, who had limited playing time last season. The Cavaliers believe Tyson deserves consideration for the Most Improved Player of the Year award, and after this game, it's easy to see why.
Tyson finished with a game-high 39 points, including 20 in the second half. He shot an impressive 13 of 17 from the field and 7 of 9 from beyond the arc, adding five rebounds and four assists in 38 spectacular minutes. Atkinson described it as a "five-star performance."
Despite a shaky first quarter with eight turnovers, the Cavs' offense was otherwise dazzling, making eight of their first ten shots and racking up 31 points with 10 assists. However, Philadelphia took control by halftime, building a seven-point lead.
The third quarter was a stalemate, with the Cavs trailing by seven entering the fourth. But Cleveland has become accustomed to this position, as this was the 25th time they trailed after three quarters this season.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Cavs showed incredible grit, tying the game around the six-minute mark thanks to De’Andre Hunter's clutch three-pointer. The Sixers responded, but Cleveland finally took the lead with Tyson's go-ahead three-pointer with 1:59 left in the fourth.
That lead was short-lived, but Hunter's layup put Cleveland back in front with 1:05 remaining. The final minute was a nail-biter.
After a missed free throw by Evan Mobley and a game-tying floater by Maxey with 8.1 seconds left, both teams needed a moment to breathe. Atkinson drew up a play for Donovan Mitchell, but the Sixers denied him. Instead, Lonzo Ball passed to Tyson.
And this is the part most people miss...Tyson, unfazed, drove baseline and made the game-winning play – a pass to Mobley, who slammed down a two-handed dunk.
Atkinson praised Tyson's maturity, saying, "A young guy like that, you would think he would challenge and try to get a bucket. The fact that he made the wrap-around dish to Evan, that speaks to his maturity and how much he has grown in two years.”
Six Cavaliers scored in double figures. Hunter had 16 points, Mobley finished with 15, Mitchell tallied 13 with 12 assists and nine rebounds, Porter had 11 assists, Proctor added 13 points off the bench, and Ball played 12 minutes.
"It was a good team win," Tyson said. "I don’t want to make it all about me. I did have a good game. But I feel like everybody came in and made good plays that helped us win. Hopefully we can keep stacking them.”
The Sixers' Joel Embiid led with 33 points, and Maxey added 22.
Given their previous encounter, Cleveland knew what to expect: a determined Sixers team. The Cavs matched their intensity, ultimately prevailing in a game decided by one crucial play, masterfully executed by Tyson.
