Globo's Centennial Celebration: Unveiling Global Partnerships and Content Deals
A Century of Storytelling: Globo's Journey to the World Stage
In a captivating three-minute clip showcased at Mipcom in Cannes, France, Globo, the Brazilian communications giant, proudly traced its evolution from a humble newspaper launch in 1925 to becoming a powerhouse in radio and television with its Rede Globo network. But here's where it gets intriguing: Globo's future ambitions are just as captivating as its past.
The Future is Now: Globo's International Expansion
At the Cannes Carlton Hotel, Angela Colla, Globo's Head of International Business and Co-productions, unveiled a plethora of international partnerships and deals, signaling a new era for the company. With a country as vast as Brazil, Globo faces the challenge of reaching a global audience while diversifying its content offerings beyond telenovelas, ensuring its continued success and relevance.
One strategy to achieve this is through format deals. Colla highlighted that this year was pivotal for Globo's consolidation in the format sales business. In an exciting development, Globoplay has partnered with Anonymous Content for a U.S. version of "The Others," a gripping series set in a gated community in Rio's suburbs, exploring themes of intolerance and conflict. The format has already found success in Germany and Greece, with more countries set to follow.
Global Reach: Telenovelas and Beyond
Globo's partnerships extend beyond format deals. In collaboration with Turkey's Ay Yapim, the revenge saga "Leyla," based on the telenovela phenomenon "Brazil Avenue," has sold to over 20 countries, showcasing Globo's ability to create globally appealing content. Additionally, Globo has sold the format for "All the Flowers," a visually captivating story about a perfumer's battle for freedom and love, to Greece's Primavisione and Alpha. The company has also secured a deal with Portugal's SIC broadcast network for "Pages of Life," a modern classic telenovela.
Joining Forces: Globo's Co-Productions with Top Creatives
Globo is taking its global presence to new heights through co-productions with renowned creatives and companies. Ron Leshem, the creator of the original "Euphoria," will collaborate with Janeiro Studios and Globoplay to produce "Paranoia." This project, co-developed with Claudia Jouvin, promises a unique blend of intense drama and feel-good moments, drawing inspiration from hits like "Black Swan," "Whiplash," and "The Queen's Gambit."
Furthermore, Globo and Fox Entertainment Studios have announced their partnership to develop an original English-language Christmas movie set in Brazil. Aiming for cultural authenticity, Globo will provide creative guidance to reflect Brazilian traditions, including the country's unique summer Christmas celebrations.
Landmark Co-Production: Globo and BBC Studios
In a groundbreaking move, BBC Studios and Globo have signed their first co-production deal for a doc series that will immerse audiences in the heart of Brazil's Amazon rainforest. Janet Brown, president of Global Content Sales at BBC Studios, emphasized the innate Brazilian story at the core of this project, produced by BBC Studios Specialist Factual Productions and Globo.
Co-Production Highlights: Globoplay's Director of Drama and More
Alex Medeiros, Globoplay's Director of Drama, Documentaries, and Films, shed light on additional co-production arrangements. These include collaborations with Telemundo Studios, Beta Film, Fremantle, and Gaumont USA. The latter partnership will bring to life the story of Eliana Tranchesi, Brazil's high-fashion icon, in a series titled "Deluxe."
New Shows, New Success: Globo's Rising Stars
In terms of straight sales, Globo has licensed its content to top Argentine network Telefe, including "All the Flowers" and "Xuxa, the Documentary." Globoplay's latest release, the stylish thriller "Perfect Days," has become the most-watched original series on the platform since its summer premiere. This production, in collaboration with Anonymous Content Brazil, showcases a different side of Globo's audiovisual prowess, according to Colla.
Another Mipcom title, "Anything Goes," a remake of a 1980s telenovela hit, achieved a remarkable 56% audience share at the moment of the murder of its arch villainess. This production is Globo's top-grossing primetime telenovela in Brazil, with numerous brands participating in branded content actions.
A Commitment to Quality and Representation
At the Mipcom Showcase, Colla emphasized Globo's dedication to storytelling with integrity and quality. "We are storytellers, and our greatest triumph is our commitment to representing the best of our people," she said. "Our stories connect with audiences worldwide, showcasing happiness, hard work, creativity, strength, and optimism."
Globo's journey continues, and its future looks brighter than ever as it expands its global reach and diversifies its content offerings.
