The Rise and Fall of Ryan Wedding: From Olympic Dreams to Alleged Drug Lord
Imagine the precision and skill required to navigate a snowboard at breakneck speeds, carving through icy slopes. Ryan Wedding, a Canadian snowboarder, possessed these talents, but it was his intense competitive drive that set him apart. However, this very trait may have led him down a different path after his Olympic dreams fell short.
In 2002, Wedding competed in the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, but the icy course proved challenging, and he failed to reach the podium. Little did anyone know that this disappointment would mark a turning point in his life.
The Alleged Kingpin
Fast forward, and Wedding's competitive spirit seemingly fueled his rapid ascent as the leader of a notorious drug trafficking ring. US authorities claim his operation generated $1 billion annually from cocaine sales, and he allegedly ordered the deaths of those who stood in his way. This story, unfolding like a thriller, includes allegations of witness murders, corrupt lawyers, and undetected cocaine shipments across borders.
However, analysts suggest that US authorities might have exaggerated the scale of Wedding's enterprise. With the Trump administration pushing Mexico to do more against drug trafficking, Wedding's arrest becomes a high-profile victory.
A Life Transformed
Wedding's early life in Thunder Bay, Ontario, was a far cry from the glitz and glamour of drug cartels. His grandparents owned a small ski resort, Mount Baldy, which laid the foundation for his snowboarding skills. But after the Olympic disappointment, his life took a dramatic turn.
He worked as a bouncer, hit the gym hard, and started dressing like gang members. He dabbled in property flipping, acquired expensive vehicles, and began expanding his network.
In 2006, he was linked to a marijuana-growing operation, but charges were never filed. Four years later, he was convicted of conspiring to distribute cocaine and sentenced to prison, missing out on the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Building an Alleged Empire
Prosecutors argue that Wedding used his prison time to forge crucial relationships with drug dealers, expanding his network and building trust. This network's scope became evident in January when Jonathan Acebedo-García, a Canadian citizen, was killed in Medellín, Colombia's second-largest city.
Acebedo-García, who met Wedding in a Texas prison, became a trusted ally until he started working for the FBI. Wedding called him a "rat" and a "snitch." Prosecutors say Wedding used a Canadian blog, The Dirty Newz, to track down Acebedo-García and his wife, allegedly paying the website's owner to post a photo of Acebedo-García with a caption suggesting he would "never be found again."
Nearly three months later, gunmen located Acebedo-García in Medellín's upscale El Poblado neighborhood. While eating at a popular restaurant, Mi Arepa, he was shot five times in the head and killed. Wedding is believed to have sent a bejeweled necklace to one of the gunmen and circulated a photo of Acebedo-García's body to his associates as a warning.
A Trail of Contract Killings
The murder in Medellín is just one in a series of contract killings linked to Wedding. In 2023, gunmen attacked a rental home in Caledon, Ontario, mistaking the residents for rival criminals. Instead, they killed an innocent couple, Jagtar Singh Sidhu and Harbhajan Kaur Sidhu, who had recently immigrated to Canada. Their daughter, Jaspreet Kaur Sidhu, survived being shot 13 times.
In 2024, 39-year-old Mohammed Zafar was shot dead in his car in Brampton, Ontario, allegedly over drug debts.
The Corrupt Lawyer
On December 5th, Ontario's law society suspended the license of Deepak Balwant Paradkar, a lawyer based in Toronto's suburbs. The FBI alleges that Paradkar, who used the social media handle @Cocaine_lawyer, advised Wedding to have a key witness murdered.
"[Paradkar] told [Wedding], 'If you kill this witness, the case would be dismissed,'" said Bill Essayli, the first assistant US attorney for the central district of California. Paradkar is now in custody and will face extradition to the US.
Hiding in Mexico
Wedding evaded capture for years, allegedly under the protection of the powerful Sinaloa cartel in Mexico. In November, the reward for information leading to his arrest was increased to $15 million, putting him on par with the most powerful cartel bosses.
FBI Director Kash Patel likened Wedding to Pablo Escobar and El Chapo Guzmán, but security experts in Mexico are skeptical. They argue that there's no evidence Wedding controls territory, leads an armed militia, or wields significant political power.
Despite US authorities claiming Wedding's enterprise trafficked 60 tonnes of cocaine annually, this figure is not mentioned in the indictment, which only refers to specific cases involving a few hundred kilos at a time.
"This [US] administration likes to put faces on international drug trafficking," said Stephen Woodman, a security analyst in Guadalajara, Mexico. "You can expect films and documentaries about this guy."
