The grand opening of the new Dillons grocery store on the University of Kansas' west campus was a bustling affair, attracting a large crowd of eager shoppers. The highly anticipated event marked a significant milestone for the community, as the store is the first major retailer at The Crossing, a multi-use development on the university's campus.
The new Dillons store is a result of a substantial $30 million capital investment, and it boasts an impressive array of features. With several food departments, Murray's Cheese, Starbucks, and an online shopping and delivery pickup service, it offers a comprehensive shopping experience. The store also has a pharmacy with a drive-thru lane, adding convenience for customers. A stunning mural by local artist Kent Smith graces the front entryway, capturing the essence of Kansas with its vibrant imagery of sunflowers, Monarch butterflies, and the prairie.
The store's opening is particularly significant as it is part of a community improvement district, which means an additional 1.5% sales tax for two decades. However, this tax rate is still lower than the combined city and county sales taxes of 1.6% and 1.25%, respectively, which apply to most groceries. The new Dillons store is also the first in the division to use a refrigeration system that primarily relies on carbon dioxide as a refrigerant, aiming to reduce emissions by over 200 tons of CO2 equivalent annually.
The relocation and expansion of the store were not without challenges. Steve Dreher, Dillons division president, expressed gratitude to the store teams in Lawrence for their efforts in absorbing the business of the closed store. The new location, which is 30,000 square feet larger, now employs 150 more associates. Additionally, the store launched a food drive on its opening day, with volunteers collecting nonperishable food donations through the weekend. The most needed items include peanut butter, pasta and pasta sauce, soups, granola bars, cereal, and canned protein.
The new Dillons store on KU's west campus is a testament to the commitment to serve the community better than ever before. With its impressive features and community-focused initiatives, it is sure to become a beloved fixture in the area.
