DES Drug Scandal: A Mother's Fight for Justice After Being 'Poisoned' in the Womb (2025)

Imagine a world where a seemingly harmless medication, intended to help, instead casts a long shadow of suffering and uncertainty. This is the reality for Michelle Taylor, who, exposed to the pregnancy drug diethylstilbestrol (DES) in her mother's womb, now fears she may never have been able to have children.

Michelle Taylor, now 63 years old, is speaking out, calling the events surrounding DES a 'cover-up' and asserting that those affected were 'poisoned'.

DES, a synthetic form of the female hormone oestrogen, was prescribed to an estimated 300,000 women between the 1940s and late 1970s. The drug's intended purpose was to prevent miscarriages and suppress breast milk production. But here's where it gets controversial: DES has been linked to a rare vaginal cancer and reproductive system damage.

Michelle's mother, Sylvia Bennett, received DES during two pregnancies. Later, DES was connected to clear-cell adenocarcinoma, a rare vaginal cancer, leading to decades of monitoring for Michelle. However, she claims she was never informed that the drug could damage her reproductive system. She also worries about the impact of DES on her daughter and nieces.

This story unfolds as campaigners are demanding a public inquiry into these events.

When Michelle was 15, her mother passed away from bowel cancer. Michelle and her sister, Christine Holt, were called to Birmingham Women’s Hospital. They were told that the children might be affected by clear-cell adenocarcinoma, a rare cancer. Michelle was so traumatized by the process that she passed out and had to be screened under anaesthetic a few weeks later. While her sister received treatment, Michelle was monitored for many years.

At 23, Michelle had a near-fatal ectopic pregnancy, followed by another four months later. She believes these were caused by DES exposure, as her fallopian tubes were narrowed. Doctors told her husband they would never have children.

And this is the part most people miss: Michelle was never informed that the drug could damage the reproductive system. She and her husband went through six rounds of IVF before finally having a daughter, Issy, now 25. It wasn't until 1997 that literature on DES began to emerge from the US, which Michelle described as a 'revelation'.

Michelle, her daughter, and her sister are now part of DES Justice UK (DJUK), a group of over 300 people seeking answers from the government, along with a redress scheme and a screening program for those exposed to DES. The stories from other members have deeply moved her.

Michelle's story raises a critical question: Were these women unknowingly used as test subjects?

She emphasizes the emotional toll, stating that women's 'human right to have a child' was taken away. She highlights the stories of women who have faced infertility and rare cancers, many unaware of their mothers' or grandmothers' exposure to DES. She believes these women were 'like lambs to the slaughter,' their maternal instincts exploited.

There are now concerns that the abnormalities may have passed to the next generation. Michelle's daughter has had abnormal cervical smears, while one niece has a misshapen womb and has been treated for abnormal cells on her cervix. Another niece has been diagnosed with breast cancer, which has been linked to DES exposure, and has also been treated for abnormal cervical cells.

Michelle finds solace and strength in being part of DJUK. She describes the 'fight to get justice' as lonely but being a part of DJUK as 'amazing.' She believes these women were exploited and used as guinea pigs for profit.
