Matamata-Piako District Council Fined $105,000 for Unacceptable Wastewater Discharges
The Matamata-Piako District Council has been fined a substantial amount of $105,000 for repeatedly discharging poorly treated wastewater into a Waihou waterway. This incident has sparked concern and calls for stricter environmental regulations.
The council's conviction in the Hamilton District Court stems from an investigation revealing that the Waihou wastewater treatment plant had been releasing wastewater, including sewage, exceeding consent limits between late 2022 and October 2023. This prolonged period of non-compliance highlights the severity of the issue.
The regional compliance manager, Patrick Lynch, emphasized the importance of resource consents, stating that they are 'licenses to operate' designed to protect waterways. He stressed that meeting consent conditions is not optional and is crucial for safeguarding our natural environment.
Judge Melinda Dickey's statement further underscores the gravity of the situation, describing the discharges as 'not only culturally offensive but also detrimental to the overall health of the water.' The judge's words emphasize the need for accountability and the potential long-term consequences of such actions.
This is not the first time the Matamata-Piako District Council has faced scrutiny. The regional council had previously warned the council for similar breaches between 2017 and 2022, indicating a pattern of non-compliance. The council's response to this latest fine includes a commitment to environmental responsibility and a $1.7 million project to ensure future compliance.
The council's CEO, Manaia Te Wiata, expressed sincere apologies to those affected, including mana whenua, and emphasized the council's dedication to environmental care. He stated that any breach of resource consent conditions is unacceptable, reflecting a commitment to learning from past mistakes.
In addition to the recent fine, the Matamata-Piako District Council faced legal consequences in the past. In 2024, they were fined nearly $70,000 for discharging sewage into the Mangawhero Stream over a five-day period. Similarly, in 2020, a wastewater pipe break in Morrisonville resulted in sewage discharge into the Piako River, leading to a fine of nearly $50,000. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges in maintaining environmental standards and the need for continuous improvement in wastewater management practices.
