Coco Gauff's recent form has left fans and critics alike questioning her choices. But here's where it gets controversial: despite her struggles, Gauff remains committed to her new coach, Gavin MacMillan.
After hiring MacMillan post-US Open 2025, Gauff aimed to address her notorious serving issues. However, the problem persisted into the new season, with Gauff topping the WTA Tour in double faults in 2025.
Her disappointing loss at the Qatar Open to Elisabetta Cocciaretto in straight sets only added fuel to the fire. As Gauff prepares for the Dubai Tennis Championships, the question on everyone's mind is: will she stick with MacMillan?
In a recent interview, Gauff asserted that she's 'improving', despite her poor results. When asked about her plans with MacMillan, she said, 'I'm trusting the process. I'm tough on myself, but I'm trying to find the right recipe.'
Gauff believes that most players aim to peak at the Grand Slams, and she's no exception. 'I'm learning and growing. My serve is getting better, and I feel more confident going for it. The doubles faults are definitely less this year,' she added.
But here's the part most people miss: Gauff hasn't won a tournament in 2026 yet. Her best performance was a quarter-final appearance at the Australian Open.
In Dubai, Gauff will make her sixth consecutive appearance since 2021. While she's yet to win the competition, her previous attempts have been a mixed bag. Last year, she was upset by her compatriot, McCartney Kessler, in the second round.
This year, Gauff received a first-round bye and will face the winner of Anna Kalinskaya and Jelena Ostapenko in the second round.
So, will Gauff's persistence pay off? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: her journey is a testament to the power of resilience and belief in one's process.
