Get ready for a budget that's sure to spark debate! Rachel Reeves, the defiant chancellor, is calling for unity among Labour MPs, but there's a catch: they might not love all her policies.
In a passionate address to the Parliamentary Labour Party, Reeves described politics as a team effort, promising a "fair" budget announcement tomorrow. However, backbenchers are reportedly frustrated by the prospect of more tax hikes, especially with falling opinion polls.
But here's where it gets controversial... Reeves urged MPs to see the budget as a package, not a pick-and-mix, where they can choose the parts they like. She highlighted her top priorities: cutting living costs, reducing NHS waiting times, and reducing debt servicing costs, which now consume £1 in every £10.
Newspaper reports suggest MPs cheered when Reeves vowed to stay put at Number 11, despite criticism of her economic handling. She declared, "I'll show them all! I'll be here next year and the year after that!"
Reeves hinted that Labour MPs will agree with 95% of the budget, but there are tough political decisions still to come. And this is the part most people miss: growth forecasts have been downgraded every year until 2029, putting the government in a tricky spot.
On the brighter side... Reeves is expected to announce more financial headroom than initially thought, allowing ministers to claim the country is out of an "economic doom loop." A positive surprise, indeed!
However, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch accuses Reeves of stymying growth with "job-killing measures." She thinks Reeves is doing a terrible job and warns Labour to pay attention to public perception. Many believe Reeves should cut taxes, and if she raises them, she should go, says Badenoch.
And this is where it gets interesting... At the CBI conference, Badenoch urged the government to scrap the Employment Rights Bill, calling it an assault on flexible working that would empower trade unions and drag the UK back to the 1970s. The bill includes measures to ban zero-hour contracts, but Badenoch argues it would effectively ban seasonal and flexible work.
The CBI conference marks a challenging anniversary for the government, with attention turning to Reeves' speech there last year. She had promised businesses no more borrowing or taxes, a stark contrast to what she's expected to announce tomorrow.
In other news, the Green Party calls for a 1% wealth tax on assets over £10m, rising to 2% over £1bn, potentially raising £15bn annually. Leader Zack Polanski also wants capital gains tax rates, currently among the lowest in the G7, to be raised in line with income tax.
As budget announcements trickle in, Reeves is expected to freeze income tax thresholds again and lift the two-child cap on benefits, costing around £3bn annually. Rail fares in England will be frozen for the first time since the 1990s, saving commuters hundreds on season tickets. An above-inflation rise to the state pension is also planned, giving 13 million people an extra £550 a year from April.
